Workshop in Poreč: Tourist offer and tourist providers in Istria

The representatives from every project team, National Trust employees, owners of agritourism households, Tourist Office workers, representatives from the Institute for Agriculture and Tourism in Poreč, where the workshop was held, gathered to participate in this workshop.

It was discussed not only about the cultural heritage role in tourism, but also about advantages and drawbacks of the increased tourism offer and big tourist operators having on the cultural heritage. New forms of tourism, such as agritourism, rural tourism and cycling tourism, as well as new itineraries, as cycling and hiking itinerary, itinerary entitled the path of olives and truffles, and the wine roads itinerary were presented during the workshop. Special attention was given to the possibility of development of new destinations and their particular worth on which it would be possible to increase destination recognisability. Further discussion emphasised the magnitude of material and non- material (tradition, customs, events) resources important for the development of the cultural tourism. The necessity for the cultural heritage perseverance, need for new sign – posts on the roads, requirement for infrastructural improvement of damaged cultural monuments, e.g. castles, in order to secure cultural site sustainability, are among the issues that were also pointed out at the workshop. Moreover, the workshop highlighted the meaning of different events during the summer season, what induced the revitalization of the cultural heritage to become recognizable for all Istrian destinations in order to improve the development of cultural tourism in Istria.
